When I first started Sugar & Spize in 2023, I had just five prints.
You Are Magic, Everything is Figureoutable, Cheers, Bon Appetit and Coffee Club were the beginning of what would eventually become Sugar & Spize.
There was no huge collection, no grand business plan, and definitely no expectation that those first few designs would eventually find their way into thousands of homes around the world.
Before becoming a full-time artist, I worked in digital marketing. Art had always been something I loved, but for a long time, I never really imagined it could become my career.
Sugar & Spize started simply: I wanted to create the kind of art I personally loved, colourful, playful and full of personality.
Then people started finding my work
Those first five prints slowly became ten. Then twenty. Then a lot more.
Somewhere along the way, what started as a small creative experiment became a real business.
Today, Sugar & Spize has grown to 15,000+ orders, with my artwork hanging in homes, nurseries, playrooms, offices and little corners of the world I probably never would have imagined reaching when I uploaded those first few designs.
And perhaps one of the strangest parts of growing as an artist is seeing which pieces people connect with.
Sometimes it's a design I knew I loved from the beginning. Other times, it's something I created almost instinctively that suddenly takes on a life of its own once other people see it.
That's one of my favourite things about making art: once it leaves my hands, it becomes part of somebody else's space and story.
Still drawn by one artist
Despite how much Sugar & Spize has grown, the heart of it hasn't really changed.
Every Sugar & Spize design begins with me.
I still create the artwork, obsess over little details, experiment with colours and typography, and regularly add new pieces whenever inspiration strikes.
I've never wanted Sugar & Spize to become a place filled with generic wall art just for the sake of having more products. I want the collection to feel recognisable — colourful, whimsical, a little unexpected, and unmistakably Sugar & Spize.
Where we're going next
For the longest time, most people discovered my work through Etsy. That's an enormous part of the Sugar & Spize story, and I'm incredibly grateful for every person who took a chance on an independent artist they found online.
But lately, I've been thinking a lot about what comes next.
I'm putting more of my energy into beautifully printed physical art, growing this little website into a home of its own, and bringing Sugar & Spize into more independent shops and spaces around the world.
It's funny to think that all of this started with five prints.
I don't know exactly what the next chapter will look like — but I hope it involves a lot more art, a lot more colour, and plenty more walls that could use a little Sugar & Spize.
Thank you for being here. ♡
